Thomas M. Hotaling

Tom Hotaling’s work with cultural and academic communities creates settings that invite participation and engagement. With a background in adapting historic buildings, Tom brings particular expertise in balancing heritage with contemporary needs. His thoughtful leadership in the design of museums and libraries creates environments responsive to the changing needs of collections presentation, public programming, and patron services. His work includes projects for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Phillips Exeter Academy, Washington University in St. Louis, Harvard University, the New England Conservatory, and the Newark Public Library in New Jersey. 

Tom has led courses in the preservation and adaptation of historic buildings at Harvard University and serves on the Boston Landmarks Commission, charged with the stewardship of the city’s built heritage. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and received his Master of Architecture degree from Washington University, where he is a member of the University’s National Council and a Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient. He has been a guest lecturer for the Society for College and University Planning, a grants reviewer for the Pew Charitable Trust, and is a trustee for the International Institute of Spain, a language and cultural center in Madrid.
