Bates College
Kalperis and Chu Halls

Student life at Bates College centers on a rich residential and campus culture. Our Campus Plan explored the revitalization of underutilized buildings, investment in the surrounding neighborhood, integration of campus programs with new student housing, landscape initiatives, and development of a multi-phase plan for implementation.

As a first phase of the Plan, we designed a two-building residential complex that houses 243 students in a variety of room types. Fireplace lounges, kitchens, game rooms, and dedicated study areas enhance student community life. A retail commons includes the campus bookstore, post office, and print services center.

The buildings are clad with local brick and granite masonry, with generous bedroom windows and vertical glass corners for shared spaces. Located on the edge of the campus, the new complex and its green spaces create a prominent connection between the College and the surrounding Lewiston community.

The new “Treehouse” lounge on the penthouse floor of Kalperis Hall provides vibrant social settings with high ceilings, large windows, warm finishes, and comfortable furnishings.
“... it was the Ann Beha [now Annum] team who imagined what our new residence halls could be. They took the time to understand Bates as an institution and Bates as a built environment. . . The resulting buildings are a stunning success — faithful to our campus vernacular yet utterly contemporary in form and function.”
