Burke Library Renovation
Constructed in 1972, the 88,000 GSF modernist Burke Library building was designed by Hugh Stubbins and Associates, using a material palette of concrete, glass, and wood. The building’s open flexible planning continues to accept change as the Library evolves. Our first phase of the overall building renovation focuses on the first floor, creating welcome for all Library users, access to the Library’s digital scholarship programs and services, and a shared setting for conversation and collaboration.
The renovation preserves the original modernist aesthetic framework while warming the interior with new lighting and color. Comfortable new seating areas are gathered around the building’s perimeter, optimizing the exceptional daylighting provided by the original building design and views of the historic campus. The original front reading area is expanded and connected with a sliding glass partition to a new study room for after-hours use. A long serpentine oak bookcase serves as a visual marker to print collections on upper floors. An new exhibition area provides a first-floor venue for historic collections and archives rarely seen before. Changes to building systems, new LED lighting, and the use of LEED approved materials contribute to a healthier interior.
The remainder of the floor is reconfigured for Burke’s LITS Group (Library and Informational Technology Services) to support the full range of LITS services offered to students, faculty, and visitors. These include 3D design and printing, virtual reality studios, a collaborative technology lab, a classroom, and soundproof rooms for podcast productions. Shared service points throughout the floor ensure that Library users can easily connect with LITS staff.
